Tape Infos

More than two years after their last album release „Who Else”, Modeselektor is back with the new album „Extended”, a mixtape with 27 all new tracks by the Berlin-based duo.

In 2020, Modeselektor spent more time in the studio than ever before, reshaping old tracks, constructing new ones and gradually assembling the mixtape as a response to the chaos and uncertainty of the outside world. The result is „Extended”, a whirlwind flying through 27 tracks in around 66 minutes and maintaining a flow that feels natural, even as the music seesaws through distortion-laced rave riddims, speaker-rattling boom-bap, gnarled dub meditations, gleeful melodic bliss and a lot more. Included are collaborations with Jackson & His Computer Band and legendary dub vocalist Paul St Hilaire.

„Extended” will get released on April 9, 2021 on all digital channels and on April 30, 2021 on CD and limited Tape. It will be followed by a series of EPs, each one built around a different track from the mixtape with vocal contributions, reworks and remixes.

General Infos

At this point, there aren’t many things that Modeselektor haven’t done. Over the past two decades, the Berlin duo of Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary
have gone full throttle, breaking every sonic boundary as they’ve dropped dozens of records, run a few landmark record labels and toured the world
countless times, both as DJs and with their larger-than-life live show. Alongside friend and longtime collaborator Apparat, they’ve even managed to climb
the pop charts a few times with their joint Moderat project.

Amidst all that activity, however, there was one item on Modeselektor’s wish list that they’d never been able to complete: a mixtape consisting of nothing
but their own, all-new material. It was something that the pair had discussed for years, but it wasn’t until Autumn 2019, after the release of their Who
Else album, that they really set to work on it, digging through their archives and revisiting old song ideas, some of them dating as far back as 2007. Once
the pandemic hit, that process only intensified; like most artists, Modeselektor missed life on the road, but lockdown also granted them their first extended
break in 15 years and they were determined to make the most of it. During 2020, Gernot and Szary actually spent more time in the studio than ever
before, reshaping old tracks, constructing new ones and gradually assembling the mixtape as a sort of response to the chaos and uncertainty of the outside
world.

As the months passed, the duo ultimately went through 10 different versions of the mixtape, and Extended is the end result. It’s a whirlwind, flying
through 27 tracks in just under 66 minutes and somehow maintaining a flow that still feels natural, even as the music seesaws through distortion-laced
rave riddims, speaker-rattling boom-bap, gnarled dub meditations, gleeful melodic bliss and a whole lot more. Included in that thrill ride are collaborations
with Jackson & His Computerband (“Hood”) and legendary dub vocalist Paul St. Hilaire (“Movement”), but the story of Extended is very much the
story of Modeselektor themselves, as its bass-driven exploits showcase their irreverence, technical prowess and utter disregard for traditional notions of
genre.

Set for release on April 9, Extended will be available on Tape, CD and digital/streaming platforms, and will be closely followed by a series of EPs,
each one built around a different track from the mixtape. In addition, the extramundane dancer Corey Scott-Gilbert created a choreographed interpretation
of Extended, which was turned into the film Work by video artist Krsn Bransko and dramatic advisor Tobias Staab. Work will get released in April
as well.

The dancefloor might be off limits right now, but Modeselektor never stop moving.
