Extended: It’s a wrap!

With the releases of the single MAD feat. FLOHIO, the vinyl- and limited box-set-editions of EXTLP as well as the bonus-LPs Missed Opportunities and Extended Chords on Bandcamp, Modeselektors most prolific year to date comes to an end. What started as a mixtape evolved through three EPs and culminated in a new album and box set with loads of bonus tracks. This is what happened:

Extended (release date: April 9, 2021)

In 2020, Gernot and Szary of Modeselektor spent more time in the studio than ever before, reshaping old tracks, constructing new ones and gradually assembled the mixtape Extended, which features 27 new and unreleased tracks in around 66 minutes. The music seesaws through distortion-laced rave riddims, speaker-rattling boom-bap, gnarled dub meditations, gleeful melodic bliss and a whole lot more. Available as limited Tape, CD and on all digital services. There are few tapes left here.

Mean Friend (release date: April 23, 2021)

Some of the tracks from Extended were turned into full-length-versions with guest vocals. First up is Mean Friend, based on the Extended-track Mean. Blixa Bargeld of Einstürzende Neubauten lends his haunting voice and poetic lyrics to Komm, a rework of Mean. Also features new versions by Modeselektor, remixes by Telefon Tel Aviv, DJ Stingray and Giant Swan as well as the Post-Rock-Version Brush Your Teeth Mean Friend with Shellac-bass player Bob Weston and former Sepultura-drummer Igor Cavalera. Available digitally everywhere and in two vinyl-volumes. Very few copies left here.

Social Distancing (release date: May 21, 2021)

The second EP released in the wake of the Extended-mixtape is Social Distancing, a song based on the track Soda from the mixtape. Social Distancing bridges the gap between hip-hop and rave and reunites the Berlin duo with FLOHIO (“Rap’s Sonic Revolutionary”, according to Mixmag). The EP also includes a rework of the track by Modeselektor themselves, as well as remixes by Brainfeeder-affiliates Little Snake, Bay Area-rebel Bored Lord, Techno-Supergroup FJAAK and Spandau20-affiliates J.Manuel & Anna Z. – plus an edit by the mighty Richard Devine. Dating Is In China (release date: June 18, 2021)

Dating is in China is quite possibly Modeselektor’s most overtly pop track they’ve ever created. It’s based on the Extended-track Disc and features another collaboration with Argentinian artist and Monkeytown-affiliate Catnapp, who adds a uniquely pure and honest performance, that was recorded in just one take. Modeselektor themselves present two more reworks of the track for the EP-release + remixes by swedish pop sensation Aasthma (Pär Gridvik & Peder Mannerfelt), Jersey club queen UNIIQU3 and old friend TimTim. EXTLP (release date: November 5, 2021)

And then there is EXTLP. The album holds 15 tracks from the Extended-mixtape in its full-length-glory. EXTLP is very much rooted in bombastic rave sounds, but there is much more to this romp than barreling techno and neck-snapping breakbeats. Modeselektor tear through mutant crunk distortions, glitchy dub meditations, neon synth-pop and much more. Guests include Paul St. Hilaire, FLOHIO, Catnapp as well as Blixa Bargeld for an extended version of the track Komm. CD and digital release was already on November 5 and the first charge of the double-vinyl-edition is already on the way to everyone who ordered before November 5. A second charge will go out by the end of January 2022. The limited Box Set is already sold out and holds two bonus vinyls: Missed Opportunities as well as Extended Chords.
